William Gibbs McNeill Whistler (1836-1900) studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1865, after serving as a physician in the Confederate Army, he moved to London, where he became a highly respected surgeon. This portrait was completed in the drawing room at 110 rue du Bac in September or early October 1894. Whistler liked the lithograph and included impressions of it in two exhibitions. This impression was hand-printed on a fine paper, but Whistler's printers also produced three thousand impressions of it on commercial paper for inclusion in the November 1896 issue of The Pageant.
