Black Lion Wharf and The Lime-Burner are among the greatest of Whistler's early etchings. Both were completed in 1859. Additional impressions of both were pulled in 1871, when they were included in the portfolio Sixteen Etchings of Scenes on the Thames, commonly known as the "Thames Set." Whistler etchings are identified by "G" numbers as assigned in James McNeill Whistler: The Etchings, a catalogue raisonné, by Margaret F. McDonald, Grischka Petri, Meg Hausberg, and Joanna Meacock (University of Glasgow, 2012), http://etchings.arts.gla.ac.uk. This print is G54 state 4 of 4.
