[2] The original deed of Charles Lang Freer's gift was signed in 1906. The collection was received in 1920 upon the completion of the Freer Gallery.

Charles Lang Freer (1854-1919) acquired more than twenty of Whistler's late nudes in pastel or watercolor, as well as impressions of almost all related etchings and lithographs. Whistler completed only six or seven late nudes in oil, including three at the Freer. See also Harmony in Blue and Gold: The Little Blue Girl (F1903.89) and Purple and Gold: Phryne the Superb!--Builder of Temples (F1902.115).
