In an act forbidden by Buddhist law, the warrior Iga Jutaro holds a rabbit aloft as he prepares to kill it with a large knife he holds in his right hand. The scene is at the altar of a Buddhist temple; the canopy overhead is marked with the swastika symbols that in East Asia denote a sacred place. Expertly controlled color gradation in the smoke and other motifs enhance the artistry of this image.
