Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, given by Mrs. Vida R. Stringer in 1997Notes:
[1] According to Curatorial Remark 1, Ann C. Gunter, September 24, 1997, in the object record: "This vessel and several others (S1997.50-54) were given to Mr. and Mrs. Harry R. Stringer while he was Commercial Attache with the U.S. Embassy in Iran between 1961 and 1965 by Jean Royere, a French interior designer under contract by the Shah of Iran and friend of Mrs. Stringer's cousin. Mr. Royere traveled extensively in Iran, often in the company of his close friends M. and Mme. Roman Ghirshman. Among the sites they visited (and where they apparently acquired a number of artifacts) were Hasanlu and Susa. A letter from Mr. Stringer to me dated June 2, 1997 provides detail of this collecting (and provenance) history."
