Steep mountains are painted with swift, dry brush strokes. On bank in foreground, a pair of cranes, emblems of longevity, are offered food from a basket. A bridge disappears behind a cliff to the right, and a path leads back toward a secluded residence at the base of the distant mountains.

1. (Ann Yonemura, excerpted from exhibition label, "Japanese Scholar-Painters," 1985) The painter, Hoashi Kyou, has written a brief inscription in the upper left corner of the painting, giving a date corresponding to the second month of 1863.
