Storage jar with matching lid.
Clay: hard, sonant.
Glaze: white slip under clear glaze, with thin blackish stains; roughened and blistered.
Inside glaze: brilliant, thin brown.

Label

Covered jars like this one, in a range of sizes, were made in large quantities in Tachikui and were used to store salt and condiments in the kitchen. Under a coating of colorless glaze, white slip (liquid clay) conceals the dark clay. Brown glaze on the interior, visible around the lip, sealed the jar against leakage.
