The artist Kiyonaga became one of the premier designers of prints of beautiful women. He portrayed women of elegance and dignity with slender, graceful figures, a style that influenced many nineteenth-century European and American artists who collected and studied Japanese prints. In contract to the flamboyant attire often worn by courtesans, these women wear simple summer kimono made of light, gauzy fabrics. Accents of red in the obi (sash) and underdress worn by the seated woman give a hint of erotic allure.
