The appearance of a print is affected by many factors, including the way in which the plate is inked, the color of the ink, and the kind of paper used. This impression of The Pool is richly printed on thin laid Japan paper, which gives an extra luster to the dark black ink. The Pool was a wide stretch of the Thames downstream from Black Lion Wharf.
Whistler etchings are identified by "K" numbers as assigned in Edward Kennedy's catalogue, The Etched Work of Whistler, (New York: Grolier Club, 1910; and subsequent editions). This print is K43; third state of four.
Whistler etchings are identified by "G" numbers as assigned in James McNeill Whistler: The Etchings, a catalogue raisonné by Margaret F. McDonald, Grischka Petri, Meg Hausberg, and Joanna Meacock (University of Glasgow, 2012), http://etchings.arts.gla.ac.uk. This print is G49 state 4 of 6.
