Whistler’s Neighborhood: Impressions of a Changing London

Justice Walk, Chelsea

Squalid living conditions were exposed by Charles Booth’s investigation Inquiry into the Life and Labour of the People of London (1889–1903). Booth and his team conducted door-to-door surveys, which produced a book and color-coded street map indicating the wealth of the population. The findings revealed that tenements on streets such as Justice Walk were overcrowded with children and poor families.
