Tirta Empul
Indonesia, Bali, Tampaksiring village, 10th century, Andesite

Today Bali’s most popular bathing place, Tirta Empul is an ancient shrine. Pura Sakenan, a temple in nearby Manukaya village, contains a stone with an Old Balinese inscription that mentions the formation of two ponds at the site of Tirta Empul. The inscription’s date in the late ninth or tenth century reveals that this place has been venerated for more than one thousand years.
